Set in the Thames midway between the Sunbury and Molesey Locks, the Hampton Ferry operates only during the summer on demand. Now a bicycle and pedestrian ferry between Hampton in Richmond on the north bank and Moulsey Hurst in Surrey on the south bank, the Hampton Ferry dates back over five hundred years when it was the way for the fishermen of the town of Richmond to travel to the marshy terrain to Moulsey Hurst south of the Thames. Moulsey Hurst since then has become known as the oldest sporting venue in England. King James VI and I played golf there soon after he became king in 1603 and it had a course for horse racing in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also considered the birthplace of cricket.
